Orland Park

Police Station

Cost of Construction: $12,544,650

Size: 65,175 SF

Status: Completed July 2007

Challenge/Goal: The Village wanted to develop an environmentally sustainable renovation of an existing building within the municipal campus and to provide space and growth for the large police department.

Solution: The existing warehouse renovation afforded for tremendous overhead space, which, coupled with floor to ceiling windows, created spaces with wonderful space and natural light.  The large footprint of the existing building allowed for a highly efficient layout on a single level.  A number of environmentally sustainable strategies were employed, including savings in energy, water and materials, leading to LEED Gold Certification – the first in the US for police stations.

Leaving It In Better Condition

The Challenge: How do you take a 40-year-old industrial building 40% larger than required for its new use and tailor it to become a state-of-the-art police headquarters?
The Solution: SRBL designed a solution that involved carving out interior courtyards and pulling back the new exterior walls that resulted in abundant natural light and deep overhangs.
