Skokie

Police Station

Cost of Construction: $20,192,000
Size: 79,300 SF
Status: Completed October 2010
Challenge/Goal: The Village wanted to transform a nondescript industrial building into its new state-of-the art Police Station. The Village envisioned an environmentally-responsible station that welcomes the public, and promotes interdepartmental interaction.
Solution: SRBL’s design reused or recycled all of the existing building. Although the new footprint is smaller than the original structure, existing columns and roof planks were repurposed to create deep overhangs and a parking garage. Interior courtyards provide private areas for employees to gather. Surrounding the courtyards are glass corridors which contribute to the open plan and filtration of natural light into the interior spaces. Sustainable measures positioned the new station to receive LEED Gold Certification.

Leaving It In Better Condition

The Challenge: How do you take a 40-year-old industrial building 40% larger than required for its new use and tailor it to become a state-of-the-art police headquarters?
The Solution: SRBL designed a solution that involved carving out interior courtyards and pulling back the new exterior walls that resulted in abundant natural light and deep overhangs.
